Mail order Patterns – Laura Wheeler, Alice Brooks, etc.
George Felleman Goldsmith, Jr., "founder of Reader Mail, Inc., a service dealing with dress and needlework. The first of the group of New York City pattern companies responsible for the Laura Wheeler and Alice Brooks needlework patterns, the Anne Cabot and Marian Martin clothing patterns, and others, was incorporated August 13, 1928, and did not use a byline with its features in the beginning. As a group, the companies are a tangled web of names and addresses. Laura Wheeler and Alice Brooks patterns can be the exact same pattern printed under both names with different pattern numbers.
Mail order patterns are a too often overlooked treasure trove, not just for their adorable designs but the social history and connection to the past that comes from knowing a little bit more than usual about the original seamstress. In addition, mail order sewing patterns tended to be available in a wider range of sizes. They were seldom dated, and they had a much longer life than the patterns we’re used to seeing in the stores today. They could be dated by the envelope in which they were mailed in if you're fortunate enough to have it. They were very popular from the 1940s through the 1960s.
Please note: This listing is for a paper sewing pattern to make a garment/costume/doll/animal. This is not for a finished garment/costume/item.
